Diapause
Diapause is a type of suspended development that occurs in some organisms, most notably insects, during unfavorable environmental conditions. It is an evolutionary adaptation which allows the organism to escape unfavorable conditions, such as extremely low or high temperatures, or lack of food, and to continue its life process after the conditions improve. Diapause can also function to time reproductive cycles and can help in allowing species to survive in seasonal environments. Its importance lies in its ability to enable organisms to overcome periods of unfavorable environment, and it serves as a powerful tool against extinction. Diapause has been studied extensively and is often utilized in various management or conservation efforts.
