Bornean Orangutans

Bornean orangutans are a species of great ape endemic to the island of Borneo. They are the largest arboreal mammal and one of the most intelligent primates, capable of creating and using tools. Bornean orangutans play an important role in their ecosystems as seed dispersers; they facilitate the regeneration of tropical rainforests by eating fruit and spreading the seeds around. Their destruction of rainforest habitat due to deforestation and bushmeat hunting is a critically serious conservation issue. As a keystone species, the conservation of Bornean orangutans is essential for preserving the rainforest itself, as well as numerous other plants and animal species that depend on this habitat.
