Animal Influenza
Animal influenza, also known as avian influenza or bird flu, is an infectious respiratory disease caused by viruses that primarily infect birds, such as ducks, chickens, and turkeys. It can also infect other species, including humans. Animal influenza viruses are divided into two main types—low pathogenic (LPAI) and highly pathogenic (HPAI). LPAI viruses cause mild respiratory disease in birds, which rarely leads to death. HPAI viruses, on the other hand, can cause severe respiratory illness and death in birds very quickly. Animal influenza is important because it can spread rapidly, resulting in significant economic losses for companies that raise poultry for food production. Animal influenza can also cross species to infect humans, which can result in serious illness and even death. Therefore, humans should take precautions to avoid contact with animals or animal products that may be infected. To protect the public health, it is important to develop and implement effective control and surveillance measures to identify and control animal influenza outbreaks.
