Pregnancy Loss

Pregnancy loss is the term used for a miscarriage before the 20th week of pregnancy, or for a stillbirth after the 20th week. Despite it being a common experience, it is still a very traumatic one, with significantly negative physical, emotional and psychological impacts. Although there is no definite cause of pregnancy loss, some of the risk factors that should be considered include genetic abnormalities, lifestyle factors like smoking and alcohol consumption during pregnancy, age, being overweight or underweight, health problems like high blood pressure, and certain infections. While there is no way to prevent pregnancy loss, couples and pregnant women can take steps to reduce the chance of one occurring. This includes seeking regular antenatal care, adopting a healthy lifestyle and diet, controlling any underlying medical conditions, and avoiding the consumption of alcohol and drugs. Pregnancy loss has been recognized as a significant public health issue, and interventions should focus on improving the access and quality of antenatal care, as well as providing emotional and psychological support for women who have experienced this type of loss.
