Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the period of time prior to menopause, when a woman’s body transitions from its reproductive years to entering menopause. During perimenopause, a woman’s body reduces production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone, leading to a variety of symptoms such as irregular menstrual periods, hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and vaginal dryness. Perimenopause marks the end of fertility, as well as the onset of menopause. Understanding the changes that occur during perimenopause can help women prepare for and manage the transition to menopause. Treatment options, such as hormone therapy and lifestyle modifications, can help reduce the uncomfortable symptoms and help a woman navigate through this important life stage.
