Developmental
Biology Developmental biology is the study of the process by which organisms grow and develop from a single cell to a complex, multicellular organism. It focuses on understanding the genetics, physiology, and evolution of individual cells as they organize into tissue, organ systems, and whole organisms. Understanding the biological process of development is pivotal for understanding how diseases, such as cancer and diabetes, occur and how they can be treated. Further, it is central to the field of regenerative medicine, which seeks to use stem cells for the purpose of restoring damaged or diseased tissue. Lastly, developmental biology is the cornerstone of biotechnology, which uses living organisms to create useful products such as vaccines, drugs, and biofuels.
