White Nose Syndrome

White Nose Syndrome (WNS) is a fungal disease that affects hibernating bats in North America. It is caused by a cold-loving fungus called Pseudogymnoascus destructans. This fungus grows on the muzzle and wings of bats, disrupting their hibernation. It has been linked to a dramatic decline in the hibernating bat population, leading to concerns about the future of these critical species. WNS has led to the extinction of at least one species of bat and continues to cause population declines in other species. Efforts to contain and eradicate the disease include increasing public awareness, monitoring populations, and limiting human access to caves. Conservation of bats is important for the environment due to their role in pest control, seeding, and pollination.
