Reptile Biology
Reptiles are an ancient group of animals, distinguished by their scales and backbone, that have existed on earth for millions of years. They inhabit diverse environments and come in many shapes and sizes, from the Komodo dragon to the garden-variety garter snake. Their biology is complex and includes features such as producing eggs with leathery shells, having lungs that are adapted for breathing air, and some species having the ability to regulate their body temperature internally. Reptiles play an important role in the ecosystems they inhabit, providing food for larger predators, controlling insect populations, and dispersing seeds. They are also studied and kept as pets due to their many varied and fascinating behaviors. Reptiles’ biology provides important insight into the evolution of more complex animals, and reptile-derived medicines are becoming increasingly important in the medical field.
