Pikas
Pikas are small mammals belonging to the family Ochotonidae in the order of Lagomorpha, which includes both rabbits and hares. They are found in temperate and alpine regions of North America, Europe and Asia, typically inhabiting rocky areas such as mountainsides, grassy meadows, and tundra habitats. The significance of pikas lies in their role as indicator species in mountainous habitats - they are sensitive to changes in their environment, so biologists use them as a benchmark for assessing the health of an ecosystem. Pikas have been observed to change their behavior or physical characteristics in response to environmental stressors, such as increased nitrogen levels due to human activities. This makes them an important tool for conservation and management. Pikas are also an important source of food for many predators, including foxes, coyotes, lynx, and wolverines.
