Ocelots
Ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) are small wild cats native to North, Central and South America. They are considered an important species in maintaining bio-diversity in the areas they inhabit. Ocelots are usually found in dense forests, mangroves and swamps. They have a varied diet of small birds, lizards, rodents, and crocodiles. Ocelots are an important species in the food web, being both predator and prey depending on the region. They are currently listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List, as their habitats are being destroyed by human activities. Ocelots are also popular in the exotic pet trade, and their fur is used for fur coats and other garments. Thus, conservation of this species is important for maintaining balance in the ecosystems in which they live.
