Nests

Nests are structures built by animals, most commonly birds, to provide a safe, warm and sheltered space for their eggs and young. The construction materials used and the shape of the nest varies between species, with some nests constructed from mud, sticks and other natural materials, and others being built from plant fibers, wool or feathers. Nests provide protection from predators and extreme weather conditions, and, in some cases, act as a microclimate, helping the eggs to incubate, hatch and thrive. The ability of animals to build nests is an important adaptation that has enabled their continued survival and protection of their young. In addition to providing safety, some nests are used as a means of communication, with bird song used to indicate ownership of a nest area and to attract a mate.
