Extinct Birds
Extinct birds are bird species that have become extinct, meaning they no longer exist in the wild. Extinct birds have been lost to human-induced environmental changes, overhunting and other factors. Due to the irreversible damage caused by their extinction, understanding the ecology of extinct birds is essential for the conservation of at-risk species today. Extinction of bird species can also have repercussions on other species in the environment as entire ecosystems depend on native species to function properly. In addition, extinct birds can serve as case studies to understand introduction and control of disease, predation and environmental change. Recent advances in technologies such as DNA sequencing have enabled scientists to gain more insight in the study of extinct species and have provided new possibilities for conservation efforts in today’s world.
