Bogs
Bogs are ecosystems found in low-lying areas that are fed by precipitation and lack an outlet for surface water runoff. They are among the world’s rarest habitats and support a range of rare, threatened and endemic plants, fungi and animals. Bogs also provide important functions such as flood control, water purification, carbon sequestration and storing, and climate regulation. They are increasingly being recognized for their value in helping mitigate the impacts of climate change. Bogs also provide important recreational opportunities, such as hiking and bird watching, and are sometimes mined for peat, which is an important source of fuel in many parts of the world.
