Precipitation

Precipitation is the process by which water droplets and ice crystals in the atmosphere combine together to form larger drops of rain, snow, hail, sleet and other forms of precipitation. Precipitation is an important part of the water cycle, as it is the main way that water is returned to the surface of the Earth. Precipitation is also important in regulating weather patterns and distribution of water resources around the globe. It plays a crucial role in providing freshwater for drinking, agriculture and ecosystems. Additionally, precipitation is an important factor in the formation of rivers and streams, as well as restoring water sources. Since lack or excess of precipitation can both have a detrimental affect on the environment, it is important to understand and monitor precipitation for sustainable development.
