Numerical Weather Prediction
Numerical weather prediction (NWP) is a technique for forecasting the weather by using advanced mathematical computer models. It uses advanced data sets (including satellite data and observations from weather stations) to create a mathematical representation of the current state of the atmosphere. This mathematical model is then used to calculate the likely weather conditions at different points into the future. NWP is widely used to improve the accuracy of weather forecasts and to extend the lead times of such forecasts. It has revolutionized the science of meteorology, allowing much more accurate and longer-term forecasts. It is also used to provide guidance on air pollution levels and other environmental impacts, as well as to support disaster risk prevention and management.
