Water Resource Protection and Sustainable Use
Water resource protection and sustainable use encompasses a range of practices to ensure that freshwater resources are efficiently used for the benefit of humanity and the environment. These practices range from the protection of rivers, lakes and aquifers from the impacts of pollution, to the proper maintenance of watersheds and ecosystems necessary for the natural replenishment of fresh water. Water resource protection and sustainable use also involves managing water to ensure that communities have access to clean drinking water, and that activities such as agriculture, industry, and hydropower generation can continue in a sustainable manner. The goal is to ensure that the world’s shared water resources are safeguarded while they are used in a way that is equitable, efficient and sustainable.
