Scrapie

Scrapie is a rare and fatal disease which affects the nervous system of sheep and goats. It is categorized among the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), which means that it is caused by an abnormal protein, called a prion, that transforms healthy proteins into abnormal ones. These abnormal proteins can accumulate in the brain and nervous system, leading to severe and irreversible damage. Scrapie can be transmitted from infected animals to healthy ones through direct contact, such as through body fluids, or indirectly, through inanimate objects or the environment. While scrapie does not pose a significant risk to human health, it can have a devastating impact on animal welfare and productivity. Veterinary healthcare professionals play a critical role in preventing, controlling and managing scrapie. This includes implementing strict biosecurity measures, such as quarantine, disinfection and surveillance. Additionally, genetic selection and breeding for scrapie-resistant animals can reduce the incidence of the disease in flocks. It is essential for animal owners, farmers and veterinary professionals to be aware of the signs and symptoms of scrapie. Affected animals may exhibit behavioral changes, such as increased nervousness or aggression, difficulty standing or walking, tremors, and loss of coordination. These symptoms can progress rapidly and lead to death within weeks or months. In conclusion, scrapie is a rare and serious disease that affects sheep and goats. Veterinary healthcare professionals can play a crucial role in preventing its spread and managing its impact on animal health and welfare. By implementing strict biosecurity measures, genetic selection and breeding, and vigilant surveillance and monitoring, the risk of scrapie can be minimized, and the health and productivity of flocks can be ensured.
