brainstem response The Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is an electrophysiological test used to assess the nerve pathways involved in hearing. This test is used to detect any hearing deficits in newborns, as well as diagnose certain types of hearing loss in adults. It is simple, noninvasive, and requires no sedative or anesthetic medications. ABR is able to identify neurological abnormalities such as brain malformations and tumors. The ABR test can also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of hearing aid devices and to monitor the effects of cochlear implant surgery. This test is beneficial for many because it plays a major role in diagnosing and understanding auditory processing.
