Pressure Ulcer
Pressure ulcer, also known as pressure sores or bedsores, is a type of wound caused when a person is confined to bed or wheelchair, or otherwise has pressure applied to an area of the skin. By reducing blood flow to the area, the tissue can break down and cause a painful and open wound. Pressure ulcers can be debilitating and lead to serious infections if not quickly treated, so it is important for those with limited mobility to be aware of the risk factors for developing them and to seek prompt treatment if one develops. Prevention is also key, and includes pressure relief, nutrition, and skin protection. Treatment varies depending on the severity of the pressure ulcer, and may include debridement, dressings, medications, and possibly surgery.
