Buruli Ulcer
Buruli ulcer is a neglected tropical disease caused by a bacterium (Mycobacterium ulcerans) leading to the development of skin lesions that can become extensive and disfiguring. Although Buruli ulcer is found in more than 30 countries, the highest burden of the disease is in West and Central Africa. If not treated in time, the lesions can spread to the underlying soft tissues and bone, leading to severe functional impairment and disability. Early diagnosis and treatment with a combination of surgery and antibiotics are essential to prevent long-term disability. As Buruli ulcer is a neglected tropical disease, it is critical to raise awareness and improve access to diagnosis, treatment and care for those affected.
