Aphthous Ulcers
Aphthous Ulcers, also known as canker sores, are small, painful sores that form inside the mouth. They are most commonly found in the inner cheek and lips, on the gums and occasionally on the tongue. They can range in size from a few millimeters to about a centimeter in diameter. They usually appear as a red bump and are filled with clear or yellowish fluid. They can cause pain and discomfort, making it difficult to eat and talk. The exact cause of aphthous ulcers is unknown, but they are thought to be linked to stress, food allergies or certain types of bacteria. Treatment includes a variety of topical ointments, as well as avoiding foods that aggravate the ulcers.
