Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers

Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (VHF) are a group of illnesses caused by RNA viruses belonging to various families. These viruses cause fever, bleeding, organ damage, and shock in humans and many other animals. VHF can be spread by mosquitoes, direct contact with an infected animal or person, come in contact with secretions, or contact with contaminated objects. Due to their wide range of severity and potential to cause serious complications, VHF can be fatal. Diagnosis of VHF is based on the clinical presentation, laboratory findings, and epidemiological risk. Early diagnosis and treatment of VHF can reduce mortality and prevent spread of the virus to others.
