Tropical Infections
Tropical infections are illnesses caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites that are spread by insects or in contaminated water or food in tropical or subtropical regions of the world. These infections can have serious health consequences and even be fatal if left untreated. Common tropical infections include malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, chikungunya and yellow fever. Control and prevention involve avoiding mosquito bites, using insect repellent, practicing good hygiene and using insecticide-treated bed nets. Vaccines are also important for prevention. Treatment typically involves antimalarial drugs or antiviral medications, depending on the type of infection. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing the serious complications of tropical infections.
