Neglected Tropical Disease
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of infections that are particularly prevalent in low-income countries but are largely ignored in public health policies and medical care. NTDs have a significant social and economic impact since they affect the most vulnerable and marginalized populations of the world. The main NTDs include soil-transmitted helminth infections, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, dengue, rabies, trachoma, and leprosy. Treatment and prevention strategies for NTDs focus on reducing disease transmission and improving access to diagnosis, treatment and prevention services. The scale-up of NTD interventions is essential to improve the health and wellbeing of populations, particularly those living in poverty.
