Leprosy
Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae, primarily affecting the skin, peripheral nerves, and mucous membranes. Its long-term effects can be debilitating and disfiguring, leading to physical and social deprivation. Treatment with antibiotics must begin early and continue for at least a year to be effective. Early diagnosis and treatment are paramount for reducing the long-term consequences of this disease. With improved awareness and access to diagnostics, many countries have eliminated leprosy as a public health issue. Leprosy is also known as Hansen's disease, after the discoverer of the M. Leprae bacterium, Dr. Armauer Hansen.
