Transgenic Infectious Diseases Research
Transgenic infectious disease research is the study of how infectious diseases can be prevented or reduced by manipulating an organism's genetic material. A transgenic organism contains genes from two or more different species, often a combination of a human gene and a virus gene. This research aims to determine how a virus changes after it has been combined with the human gene, how it is affected by the environment, how it is transmitted, and how it can be prevented. In doing so, research is conducted on the effect of transgenic organisms on the immune system and how transgenic vaccines might be created. The use of transgenic infectious disease research has contributed to the development of treatments and vaccines against a variety of diseases, including HIV, influenza, and malaria. Additionally, transgenic research may help identify new drugs and treatments for existing diseases.
