Platelet Aggregation

Platelet aggregation is the process of platelets stick together and form clumps. It is an essential process in the clotting of blood and wound healing. Platelet aggregation is controlled by biological factors such as damaged blood vessels, hormones, and proteins secreted by the platelets. The same effects can be artificially induced to prevent or stop unwanted bleeding. Platelet aggregation is important in medical treatments such as thrombolysis, a procedure used to remove clots from blood vessels or stop bleeding from trauma. Additionally, platelet aggregation can be used to diagnose platelet-related disorders such as thrombocytopenia and von Willebrand disease.
