Panton-Valentine Leukocidin
Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) is a toxin produced by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, which is a major cause of human infections. It is associated with severe skin infections such as necrotizing fasciitis, as well as with more severe infections such as pneumonia and septicemia. PVL aids in the destruction of white blood cells, leading to an increase in the severity of the infection. It is also believed to play a role in the development of antibiotic resistance. PVL is an important target of research, as it could lead to the development of new treatments and vaccines. Additionally, PVL testing is now used to diagnose infections caused by S. aureus and can be used to guide treatment decisions.
