Osteomyelitis

Osteomyelitis is a bone infection which is usually caused by bacteria or fungi entering the bone through injury, surgery, or other means. It can be very serious, causing destruction of bone and inflammation of the surrounding tissue. Symptoms may include fever, severe pain, redness, and swelling around the affected area. Treatment usually involves long-term antibiotics and in some cases, surgery to remove the infected bone. Osteomyelitis is an important condition to recognize and diagnose early as untreated infection can lead to long-term disability and even amputation of limbs. Proper diagnosis, management and treatment can be life-saving and preserve the quality of life of those affected.
