Epiglottitis

Epiglottitis is a potentially life-threatening condition that affects the epiglottis, a small cartilaginous flap at the back of the throat that helps to protect the airway from food and liquid. It is primarily caused by a bacteria known as Haemophilus influenzae or Streptococcus pneumonia, although viral infections can also cause it. Symptoms of epiglottitis include voice changes, difficulty breathing, drooling and a muffled voice. Treatment typically involves antibiotics and breathing assistance. If left untreated, it can lead to potential complications such as airway obstruction, which can be fatal. Early diagnosis and treatment of epiglottitis are critical to avoid further health problems and even death.
