Engineering of Ligaments and Tendons

Engineering of ligaments and tendons is a relatively new field of research and development which focuses on the development of artificial ligaments and tendons with similar properties to natural ones. By engineering these ligaments and tendons, scientists are able to restore lost mobility, strength and stability to damaged body parts. This research is of immense significance as it can significantly improve quality of life for those with lost mobility due to injury and trauma. Examples of their applications include the use of artificial ligaments for ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) reconstruction for those with sports injuries, and the development of artificial tendons for rotator cuff repairs and other tendinopathies. Overall, engineering of ligaments and tendons is an exciting and important field of research which has the potential to improve the lives of many.
