Desquamation

Desquamation is the process of shedding skin cells in the form of flakes and scales. It is a natural, physiological process that happens to all of us daily, as old skin cells are replaced by newly forming skin cells. This process is essential to maintaining skin health. Desquamation is especially important for keeping the skin moisturized, preventing infections, and aiding in wound healing. It can also help protect from damage caused by the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Impaired desquamation is a contributing factor for several skin conditions including dry skin, eczema, and psoriasis. It is important to maintain healthy skin desquamation in order to prevent these skin conditions and minimize their associated symptoms.
