Parathyroid Hormone

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a hormone produced by the parathyroid glands, four glands located in the neck. PTH plays an essential role in regulating the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body and is involved in the regulation of bone metabolism. It helps to maintain calcium levels in the blood, promote bone mineralization and reabsorb calcium from the bones when needed. In addition, PTH also plays a role in the production of other hormones and helps to regulate blood pressure. A deficiency or an excess of PTH can lead to serious health problems such as osteoporosis, kidney stones, and seizures. It can also interfere with the normal functioning of other hormones, leading to other health issues. For these reasons, monitoring PTH levels is essential for optimal health. PTH testing is usually done as part of a comprehensive check-up or when a metabolic disorder is suspected.
