Levothyroxine

Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of the main thyroid hormone, thyroxine. It is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition in which the body does not produce enough of the hormone. The drug works by replacing or supplementing the hormone to normalize thyroid hormone levels in the body. By restoring thyroid hormone levels, levothyroxine helps reduce fatigue, increase energy, increase metabolism, and improve concentration. It also helps relieve symptoms of depression, low libido, and weight gain associated with insufficient thyroid hormones. Studies have shown that levothyroxine is effective in treating symptoms of hypothyroidism and improving quality of life in patients.

Most nodules are cysts filled with fluid or with a stored form of thyroid hormone called colloid. Solid nodules have little fluid or colloid. These nodules are more likely to be cancerous than are fluid-filled nodules. Some types of solid nodules, such as hyperplastic nodules and adenomas, have too many cells, but the cells are not cancer cells.
