Goiter

Goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland in the neck that can cause a visible swelling. It is caused by a lack of iodine in the diet, leading to the malfunction of the thyroid gland and the production of insufficient thyroid hormones. Goiter is a major health concern in many parts of the world and is the most common preventable cause of thyroid dysfunction. Symptom management involves dietary iodine supplementation which can help to restore normal thyroid function. Early detection and treatment of goiter is critical as its symptoms can reduce quality of life and lead to more serious conditions such as thyroid cancer.

Most nodules are cysts filled with fluid or with a stored form of thyroid hormone called colloid. Solid nodules have little fluid or colloid. These nodules are more likely to be cancerous than are fluid-filled nodules. Some types of solid nodules, such as hyperplastic nodules and adenomas, have too many cells, but the cells are not cancer cells.
