Acute Pulmonary Embolism
Acute pulmonary embolism is an extremely serious medical condition in which a blood clot or other material becomes lodged in the arteries of the lungs. This causes a major blockage of the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the lungs and can be life-threatening. By quickly diagnosing and treating a pulmonary embolism, the risk of death or further complications can be drastically decreased. Pulmonary embolism is often treated with anticoagulant medication such as heparin and warfarin, as well as mechanical preventive measures such as the insertion of a filter into the vena cava. More severe cases may need to be treated with thrombolytic therapy or surgery.
