Sports and Disability

Sports and disability refer to the inclusion of people with disabilities in sport. In the past, many people with disabilities were excluded from participating in sport because of their disabilities, but more recently, new opportunities have become available for them to participate in sports. This has benefits for both the person with a disability as well as society in general. Participation in sport can provide a person with a disability an increased sense of self-confidence, a feeling of inclusion and engagement in their community, improved physical and mental health, and an opportunity to show their talents and abilities in a sport setting. Additionally, it can lead to positive impacts on wider society such as social cohesion and increased acceptance of people with disabilities. As a result, sport can become an important part of the rehabilitation of people with disabilities, and a key tool in helping them to live more independent, fulfilling and productive lives.
