Muscle Strains
Muscle strains refer to injuries sustained when the muscle fibers are stretched or torn. Commonly occurring in the shoulder, chest, hamstring, and calf muscles, muscle strains are usually caused by overstretching or overusing the muscle and can result in pain, swelling, decreased movement, and loss of muscle function. Treatment for muscle strains usually involves rest, ice and compression, elevation, and physical therapy with exercises designed to strengthen the affected muscles. While muscle strains are most often the result of sport-related activities, they can also occur from everyday activities such as lifting heavy objects. Preventing muscle strains involves warming up before exercise, following correct lifting techniques, and maintaining overall muscle strength and flexibility.
