Heat Illness
Heat illness is a group of illnesses that can occur when the body's temperature rises above 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat illnesses occur when the body is unable to cool itself, usually due to hot and humid weather, heavy physical activity and lack of water or electrolytes. Symptoms can range from minor and reversible, to severe and life-threatening, and can include heat exhaustion, heatstroke and heat cramps. Heat illness is a significant public health issue, particularly in areas of high heat and humidity and among those who work in physically-demanding occupations. Preventative measures include wearing loose clothing and a hat, drinking plenty of fluids and avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest times of the day. Early recognition of symptoms and appropriate treatment can help prevent the progression of heat illness and potential complications.
