Disorders of the Biliary System
Disorders of the Biliary System are a collection of conditions that affect the biliary ducts, which are the bile ducts and gallbladder. The bile ducts are tubes that transport bile from the liver into the small intestine. The biliary system is responsible for removing waste products from the body and transporting hormones. Common disorders of the biliary system include gallstones, cholestasis (bile flow obstruction), bile duct cancer, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and autoimmune hepatitis. Treatment of these disorders usually involves medications, lifestyle changes, and/or surgery. Understanding and managing biliary system disorders can help improve overall health, nutrition, and quality of life.
