Sleep
Sleep is a universal human behavior in which the body and mind rest and the senses become less active. During sleep, the body repairs and restores physiological functioning, and the brain processes new information and consolidates memories. Adequate sleep is essential for physical and mental health, and sleep deprivation can lead to increased risk for chronic diseases, impairment of cognitive functioning and mood disturbances. The amount and quality of sleep needed vary among individuals, yet most adults require 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. To maximize the benefits of sleep, individuals should maintain a regular sleep schedule, practice good ‘sleep hygiene’, and seek the help of a healthcare professional if they are experiencing trouble sleeping.
