Pharynx

The pharynx is a muscular tube that connects the nose and mouth to the esophagus in the human body. It plays an important role in respiration, swallowing, and speech production. During respiration, air passes through the pharynx and into the larynx which then connects to the lungs. When swallowing, the pharynx moves food from the mouth and tongue into the esophagus. Lastly, when speaking, the pharynx vibrates and allows for the production of sound. Without the pharynx, many key functions of the body would not be possible and thus it is essential for everyday life.
