Meningococcal Disease
Meningococcal Disease is a serious, life-threatening bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus) bacteria. It can result in invasive infections such as meningitis (infection of the coverings of the brain) and sepsis (blood infection), which can cause fever, headache, seizures, and in some cases, death. Vaccination is the best way to protect against meningococcal disease. Vaccines are available to protect against multiple types of meningococcus, such as meningococcal groups A, C, W, and Y. Vaccinating against meningococcal disease not only helps protect individual people but also helps control the spread of the disease within communities.
