Sleep Apnea Syndromes
Sleep apnea syndromes are conditions characterized by repeated episodes of apnea or shallow breathing during sleep. These episodes can result in temporary cessation of air flow, decreased oxygen levels, snoring, and disturbances in sleep quality and duration. Untreated sleep apnea syndromes can lead to long-term health problems, such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, and even death. Treatment typically includes lifestyle modification, such as maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding alcohol, and quitting smoking. Additionally, medical therapies may be necessary to help manage sleep apnea syndromes and reduce symptoms. These therapies can include positive airway pressure devices, oral appliances, and surgical procedures. With proper treatment, many people with sleep apnea syndromes can live a more comfortable, healthy life.
