Rapid Eye Movement Behavior Disorder
Rapid Eye Movement Behavior Disorder (RBD) is a sleep disorder characterized by the acting out of vivid, often violent dreams during REM sleep. Symptoms usually involve physical movements such as kicking, punching, and thrashing. It is typically associated with neurological diseases like Parkinson’s Disease, but can also occur in the absence of such a condition. Treatment of RBD typically involves medication and/or lifestyle changes like regular exercise and avoiding certain foods or drinks. It is important to diagnose and treat RBD to reduce its symptoms and prevent injury to the patient and their sleep partner. Additionally, treatment may improve quality of life and sleep, as well as reduce disruptions to other family members.
