Nightmares

Nightmares are vivid and often distressing dreams that occur during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. Nightmares are experienced by nearly everyone during childhood and can continue into adulthood. Nightmares are associated with greater psychological distress and can contribute to mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. Nightmares can also lead to difficulty sleeping and daytime fatigue. Treatments for nightmares such as psychotherapy and medications (e.g., prazosin) can help reduce their frequency and intensity. Through better understanding of nightmares and effective treatment strategies, it is possible to reduce their burden and improve overall sleep quality.
