Overview
Central Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder where the individual experiences pauses in their breathing during sleep. It is caused by the failure of the brain to send signals to the muscles responsible for respiration and usually occurs in combination with other sleep-related breathing disorders. Central Sleep Apnea is linked to several health conditions such as stroke and heart failure, and can lead to daytime sleepiness and fatigue. Treatment is typically focussed on treating the underlying condition, and may include lifestyle changes, medications, and use of a CPAP machine to maintain a healthy airflow during sleep.
