Tanning
Tanning is a method of preserving animal hides that have been removed from the animal to make them suitable for use as leather. Tanning involves the use of various compounds, including tannins and vegetable-based oils, to convert the proteins in the skin into a water-resistant substance that resists decomposition. Tanning has been used for centuries to make clothing, shoes, and other goods from animal hides, and is now also used in the production of furniture, luggage, and other interior items. Tanning is important to consumer safety, as it prevents the growth of bacteria and mold on leather products and makes them more durable.
