Skin Cancer in Children & Adolescents
Skin cancer in children and adolescents is a growing cause of concern in the medical field and is becoming more commonly diagnosed amongst children and adolescents. While the most common types of skin cancer in children and adolescents are basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, is also seen. Skin cancer in children and adolescents is most commonly caused by sun exposure, especially in areas of limited melanin production. It is essential that parents and children are knowledgeable about the signs and symptoms of skin cancer, including changes in the size and appearance of existing moles or the appearance of new moles, and take preventative measures. Early detection and treatment of skin cancer in children and adolescents is key, as the mortality rate is higher for those whose cancer has been allowed to progress before treatment is sought.
