Skin Cancer Diagnosis
Skin cancer is a disease that is diagnosed when the cells in the skin begin to grow out of control, forming a tumor. Diagnosis of skin cancer is critical for early intervention and successful treatment. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, and early detection is key to avoiding more serious health consequences. Skin cancer can be detected through visual examination and biopsy of the suspicious area. Visual examination includes looking for changes in the size, shape, texture, and color of existing moles. Biopsy involves the removal of a small piece of skin for laboratory testing to determine if the cells are cancerous. If a diagnosis of skin cancer is confirmed, additional tests may be required to check if the cancer has spread to the surrounding tissues or other parts of the body. With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, skin cancer can be effectively managed and often cured.
